A 25-year-old bouncer accused of fatally shooting a bar patron in August 2022 was granted home detention on Jan. 6 when defense counsel raised the argument of self-defense.

During Friday’s bail hearing, defense attorney Josh Insley told Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Ausby that his client, Kamar Williams, was working as a bouncer at his grandmother’s bar where he had to throw out 38-year-old Delaney Simmons. The victim allegedly threatened to return with a handgun and did so with an unregistered weapon.

The incident occurred on Aug. 20, 2022, near the 500 block of Bentalou Street and 2300 block of Ashton Street, and Williams was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to first-degree murder, and firearm use in a felony violent crime.

Williams “acted in self-defense and defense of other people at the bar,” Insley told the judge.

A prosecutor, standing in for the assistant state’s attorney assigned to the case, said that the defense counsel’s argument of “some kind of cross-fire” was inaccurate and that there was no evidence that the victim’s gun was fired or that the victim fired the gun.

Judge Ausby agreed to release Williams on home detention as he has no pending criminal matters.

The defendant is scheduled to appear in reception court on March 13, according to the Maryland Judiciary website.
