Opening statements were presented on Sept. 8 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Erik Atas for shooting suspect 43-year-old Eddie Murphy
Murphy is charged with attempted first-and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony or violent crime and illegal possession of a firearm.
Charging documents allege Murphy shot a woman in the face on March 29, 2025 after an argument broke out be tween the two as they headed toward the 3000 block of Cottage Avenue.
The victim attempted to flee in her car but was followed by the defendant supposedly to apologize. As the incident developed he reportedly drove her to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he got out of the car on Wolfe Street, leaving the victim to park and seek medical attention.
During opening statements the prosecution stressed they were “here because of an argument” and “What [Murphy]chose as a final say was a gun shot to a woman’s face”. She claimed the argument started because the victim refused Murphy’s sexual advances.
The defense attorney, Jason Rodriguez, countered there is no substantial evidence to support the charges levied against his client and he had no reason to shoot the victim.
The trial is continuing.
