The attempted murder trial of Eddie Murphy, 42, got underway on Sept. 4 with jury selection before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Erik Atas.
Murphy was charged with attempted first degree murder on May 6, 2025.
According to court documents, on March 29, 2025 around midnight officers responded to Johns Hopkins Hospital for a reported walk-in shooting. The female victim suffered from a wound to the right side of her face.
According to the victim, she, Murphy, and a mutual friend were at a home on the 500 block of S. Longwood Street, where Murphy and the friend began arguing. This prompted the victim and Murphy to leave in the victim’s vehicle, heading towards the 3000 block of Cottage Avenue.
An argument broke out, causing the victim to pull over and tell Murphy to get out of the vehicle. Murphy then displayed a small black handgun and allegedly shot her in the face.
She claimed that he attempted to shoot her again, however, the gun jammed. The victim then fled for her safety. However, Murphy headed the car in the direction of the victim supposedly to apologize, and drove her to the hospital, where he exited on the Wolfe Street side and left the victim to park the car and seek medical attention.
Prior to jury selection, the state offered Murphy a plea deal for 50 years for attempted first-degree murder which. Murphy rejected the plea deal stating, “I’m done with all that negotiating stuff.” Judge Atas informed Murphy that if the case goes to trial and he is found guilty, he is looking at a life sentence plus 37 years.
He’s also charged with an armed robbery to which he’s also pleaded not guilty.
Murphy’s defense attorney, Jason Rodriguez, stated that Murphy wanted the case dismissed on grounds of double jeopardy since the victim had testified against him in a previous case. The judge rejected the argument.
The trial is set for the day after Labor Day.
