While the prosecutor in the attempted murder trial of Kim Alderman argued the defendant’s “distinctive clothing” helped Baltimore Police identify him, defense counsel says the victim never saw the shooter and was on drugs at the time of the shooting.
The 53-year-old defendant stands trial for attempted first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges as well as six weapons charges in connection to the shooting on the 800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue on Dec. 5, 2023.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Troy K. Hill is presiding over the case, with defense attorney Isabel Lipman representing Alderman.
At the start of trial on Sept. 25, the prosecutor said city surveillance footage shows someone with light blue clothing riding a bicycle up and down Pennsylvania Avenue before approaching the victim.
“It lasted only seconds and [the victim] hit the ground,” the prosecutor said, referring to the moment the victim was shot.
The suspect then rode his bicycle to North Carrollton Avenue, where he was later arrested by police at his home.
According to Lipman, the victim was “medically determined to be on drugs” and was found with drugs and a crack pipe. Before the shooting, she continued, video footage shows the victim swing a PVC pipe at Alderman’s head.
No gun, bullets or cartridge casings were recovered during the investigation, Lipman noted. Alderman “retreated to the safety of his home” and was “driven out of his home” by police.
Lipman added that the defendant was found bleeding when police arrived.
