January Trial Date Set for Suspect Accused of Shooting Girlfriend

On Oct. 6, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn scheduled a trial date for a defendant charged with attempted first-degree murder in March 2022.

Samal L. Chavis, 29, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, reckless endangerment, having a handgun in his vehicle, having a loaded handgun in his vehicle, carrying a handgun and having a loaded handgun on his person.

Defense attorney Warren A. Brown was present to represent Chavis.

No plea offer was made by the prosecution. 

According to District Court of Maryland documents, on March 21, 2022, Baltimore City Police (BPD) arrived at the 400 block of Font Hill after hearing gunshots. A young woman was found in her car, claiming she had been shot.by her boyfriend, Chavis, who had followed her there from her place of work.

The victim was treated at a nearby hospital, where she identified Chavis as being the person who had allegedly shot her. 

Chavis’s trial is set to begin Jan. 17, with Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Judge Dana M. Middleton presiding.
