Edmondson Avenue Attempted Murder Defendant’s Scheduling Hearing Continued to Hire New Defense

On May 25, a Baltimore City Circuit Court judge continued a reception court hearing for an attempted murder defendant to provide him more time to find a new defense attorney. 

Judge Melissa M. Phinn ordered the case to continue on June 6 for Eric Sutton Jr., so he could hire a new defense attorney and schedule a trial date. 

Defense attorney Anne Marie Gering temporarily stood in as Sutton’s defense counsel on Thursday.

Sutton, 36, previously rejected a plea offer of life, suspending all but 45 years, with five years of supervised probation for two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of firearm use in a felony violent crime.

Sutton was arrested in connection to an incident on April 24, 2022, on the 2800 block of Edmondson Avenue. According to court documents, Sutton got into a fight after he grabbed two plastic jugs containing a “suspected green plant substance” out of a man’s hands. A third person had to break up the two.

Sutton then retrieved a gun from his car and fired it at both men. The only person who suffered injuries was an uninvolved victim inside a nearby Subway, who was struck by a bullet intended for one of the other men that went through the window.

Sutton faces three counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and firearm use in a felony violent crime. He also faces charges for reckless endangerment, illegal possession of ammunition, discharging firearms, having a handgun in a vehicle, having a handgun on his person and two counts of firearm possession as a convicted felon.
