On April 3, James Joyner appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Alan C. Lazerow for a hearing.

Joyner, 46, was charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, attempted armed robbery, reckless endangerment, firearm use in a felony violent crime, first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, conspiracy to commit second-degree assault, conspiracy to use a firearm in a felony violent crime, firearm possession with a felony conviction, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, having a handgun on his person, illegal possession of ammunition and firing a gun in Baltimore City in connection to an Aug. 28, 2023, incident.

The prosecutor spoke with a witness before the hearing, but the information presented was not the same as the facts of the case provided to the prosecution and defense attorney Roya Hanna. Because the witness changed her story, the prosecution decided to dismiss the case.

According to a police report, on Aug. 28, 2023, on the 300 block of Forrest Street, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers arrived on the scene after Joyner was maced in the face by a woman. The woman said Joyner shot at her.
