A 31-year-old man pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors on July 9 in Baltimore City Circuit Court.
Jamal Artis tried to shoot his girlfriend multiple times through a car window after an argument in a parking garage on Jan. 1 near the 400 block of Baltimore Street, according to court documents. The argument was over accusations of Artis’ infidelity.
Artis was sentenced to 15 years in prison for firearm use in a felony violent crime, suspending all but five years without the possibility of parole. Upon release, he will be barred from having any contact with the victim.
Artis was originally charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, as well as assault, weapons charges and reckless endangerment for his involvement in the shooting. The prosecution agreed to drop Artis’ other charges.
In the hearing, the victim said she didn’t want the maximum punishment for Artis and believed he was not trying to kill her.
Judge Lawrence R. Daniels accepted Artis’ plea. He sentenced the defendant to the agreed-upon terms.
