A murder defendant unable to name his assigned public defender attended his reception court hearing on July 24

Jose Flamenco-Reyes told Judge Melissa M. Phinn that he does not have a public defender assigned to him. Judge Phinn proceeded to find an attorney for him. She told Flamenco-Reyes, 36, that his new attorney is Todd Oppenheim from the Office of Public Defenders. She told him Oppenheim will come to visit him soon.

Judge Phinn assigned Flamenco-Reyes to return to reception court on Nov. 28 to pick out a trial date.

According to a press release from the Baltimore Police Department, Flamenco-Reyes and Jeremy Maldonado, 27, were engaged in a dispute on the 5900 block of Eastern Avenue. Flamenco-Reyes is accused of fatally shooting Maldonado around 4:24 p.m.

Flamenco-Reyes is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of firearm use in a felony violent crime, attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault and having an unregulated rifle or shotgun in connection to a June 3 incident.
