A 33-year-old Baltimore man accused of fatally shooting Courtney Campbell outside the Bel Park Towers in 2022 pleaded guilty for a 30-year prison sentence on Sept. 9.
Defense attorney Brian McDaniel represented Marcus Harris during Monday’s proceedings when the defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser included offense of second-degree murder for 40 years, suspending all but 25 years, and firearm use in a felony or violent crime for 20 years, suspending all but the first five years without parole.
Under the terms of the plea, Harris will also serve five years of supervised probation and must register as a gun offender.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge John A. Howard listened as the prosecution informed the court that on March 25, 2022, the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) was called to an apartment building on the 3800 block of West Belvedere Avenue just after 11:30 a.m. for reported gunfire. Police found the 34-year-old victim outside the building with multiple gunshot wounds.
Campbell was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital less than an hour later, the prosecutor said.
During the investigation, police learned that Harris returned to his apartment after shooting Campbell and called police to tell them he shot the victim. He then surrendered to when they went to his apartment.
Prior to his sentencing, Harris appeared in mental health court for a year before he was found competent to stand trial in April.
