Baltimore City Circuit Court Medical requested that the deadline for a double homicide defendant’s mental health evaluation be extended on Feb.8.

Defendant Gold Leroy Bass Jr. and stand-in attorney Sharon Bogins appeared in front of Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin on Wednesday, to receive results of his competency evaluation.

Bass, 72, was found guilty of a double homicide in 1973. After serving 46 years in prison, he was offered a plea of life in prison, suspending all but time served on June 6.

According to Maryland Judiciary Case Search, Bass is charged with first- degree murder and using a handgun to commit a crime in connection to an incident that occurred on the 4900 block of Challedon Road on Dec. 21, 1973.

On June 6, 2022, Bass and his defense attorney Janine Meckler informed the court that Bass had suffered a heart attack and a stroke while he was on appeal and would not be able to stand trial at this time.

Judge Rasin postponed Bass’ hearing until May 10 to read the results of his competency exam.
