The man accused of killing Travis Ben-Watkins in 2021 had a bail request denied by Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Y. Ausby on July 11.
The request was filed by Alejandro Gonzalez’s attorney, David Moyse, despite having one rejected on Feb. 24.
Moyse argued that the defendant wanted to get back to his two kids, who live in Georgia and should be released as a result.
The prosecution stated they were ready to start the trial, but no date was set at the proceeding. Moyse made no statement regarding his ability to start the trial.
Judge Ausby based the rejection on the fact that Gonzalez was visiting his mother from Georgia and committed such a violent crime. She decided that the defendant would be dangerous to the public if he was released on bail. The victim had been in an ongoing dispute with the defendant’s mother.
Gonzalez’s case previously received a nolle pros on Nov. 15, 2022. A new case was filed against the defendant on Jan. 24.
According to the Maryland Judiciary website, Gonzalez, 40, is charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, and having a loaded gun on his person in connection to a Sept. 4, 2021 incident.
Charging documents state Gonzalez is accused of shooting Watkins on the 5000 block of Corley Road. Gonzalez was extradited from Georgia and officially charged on Sept. 28, 2021.
