A 32-year-old man accused of his father’s murder had his bail review postponed on April 16 as he awaits a competency evaluation in Baltimore City Circuit Court’s mental health court.

In February 2020, Ruben Jackson was tried and convicted of second-degree murder and firearm use in a felony or violent crime for the fatal shooting of his father, Ruben Jackson Sr., on April 14, 2019. Three years later, Jackson was sentenced to 25 years for second-degree murder and a concurrent five years, with three years on supervised probation, for firearm use in a felony or violent crime.

The case was successfully appealed and remanded for a new trial earlier this year.

During a bail review hearing on Tuesday, Jackson’s defense attorney, Janine Meckler, requested to postpone the proceedings until her client has undergone a competency evaluation. The competency evaluation was filed last week; however, Meckler said Jackson was never transported to attend mental health court.

With no objection from the prosecution, Judge Yolanda A. Tanner agreed to postpone the bail review to June 18.
