A 29-year-old Baltimore man rejected a plea of life on Sept. 27 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn.

According to CBS News, Cox was arrested in March by police in connection to the shooting death of a 21-year-old. According to police, the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the face and body and was listed as being in serious condition.

Devonta Cox is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, car theft, two counts of armed carjacking, two counts of carjacking, discharging firearms, illegal possession of ammo, two counts of using a firearm in a felony violent crime, possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, having a handgun in a vehicle, illegally possessing a regulated firearm, having a handgun on his person, possession of a firearm with a drug conviction, and four traffic violations in connection to an incident on March 24.

Cox and his defense attorney Sharon May rejected a plea of life, suspending all but 40 years with five years with supervised probation for first-degree attempted murder, 20 years with the first five years without the possibility of parole for the use of a firearm during a felony violent crime; 30 years for carjacking, the charges are set to run concurrently.

Under the plea, the defendant would have had to stay away from the victim and register as a gun offender.

Cox waived his Hick’s date, which is his right to be tried within 180 of his first court appearance.

Judge Phinn scheduled the defendant’s trial for Jan. 9, 2023, and it is expected to last for four days.
