Man Accused of Killing Pregnant Woman Receives May Trial Date

On Jan. 9, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland scheduled the trial of a Baltimore man accused of killing a pregnant woman in 2022.

Malik McCormick is charged with first-degree murder, committing a crime of violence against a pregnant person, firearm use in a felony violent crime and having a handgun on his person in connection to the Dec. 4, 2022, death of Jaymyra Burrell.

The prosecutor offered McCormick, 22, a plea deal to serve a life sentence for first-degree murder. Defense attorney Natalie Finegar said her client would neither reject nor accept that offer at this time.

Judge Copeland scheduled McCormick’s four-day trial to begin on May 9 before Judge Charles J. Peters.

According to a Baltimore Police Department press release, officers discovered 19-year-old Burrell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue. She later died from those injuries at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

McCormick was arrested in a West Virginia traffic stop eight months after the crime. Police extradited him to Baltimore shortly after.
