Laquan Ferome and his assistant public defender Ann Marie Gering appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill for a plea hearing on Dec. 13.

Ferome, 34, was originally charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and firearm use in a felony violent crime.

However under the agreement, Ferome pled guilty to the lesser count of second-degree murder.

According to a Baltimore Police Department (BPD) press release, investigators ruled the death of 25-year-old Daniel Schaefer a homicide after he succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 24, 2022 ten years after being shot during a robbery on the 6000 block of Moravia Park Drive.

According to the prosecutor Ferome agreed to serve 30 years, suspending all but 10 years, one month and four days, with five years of supervised probation. Ferome will also be prohibited from contacting the victim’s family.

Before the judge accepted the plea, he confirmed with Schaefer’s 25-year-old daughter if she understood the plea and was okay with it. The daughter assured the judge that she accepted the terms. The judge also allowed for the daughter to make an impact statement.

After acknowledging the plea was appropriate, Schaefer’s daughter said she is engaged but her father can’t walk her down the aisle and that no child should experience the loss of a father.

When given the chance to address the court, Ferome turned to the victim’s family and said, “I am sorry.”
