North Baltimore Shootings Double in June

Non-fatal shootings in Baltimore City’s Northern District more than doubled from May to June 2023, with only a minimal decline in non-fatal shootings month over month.

There were 58 non-fatal shootings and 23 homicides in Baltimore City last month, according to Baltimore Witness data, down from May’s 60 non-fatal shootings but up from 22 homicides. However, with six non-fatal shootings reported in the Northern District in May, the same district experienced 16 non-fatal shootings in June.

Six of the Northern District’s 16 non-fatal shootings in June occurred in a single incident around 8:47 p.m. on June 16 at the intersection of East Cold Spring Lane and York Road. Baltimore Police were on the 4600 block of York Road for a car stop when they heard shots fired. Three victims were found nearby with gunshot wounds.

Three additional victims were later reported walking into the hospital to treat gunshot wounds from the incident.

No arrests have been made in connection to the incident as of July 18.

The Western District saw the second-most shootings last month, with eight, followed by five shootings each in the Northeastern, Northwestern, and Southeastern districts, and four shootings each in the Southern, Eastern, and Southwestern districts. 

Baltimore Witness reported seven shootings with undisclosed locations, while no shootings were reported in the Central District.

Six arrests have been made in connection to June’s 58 non-fatal shootings, according to Baltimore Witness data.

Baltimore City saw a slight uptick in homicides in June, increasing from 22 homicides in May to 23 homicides in June. According to Baltimore Witness data, there were only three consecutive days without homicides in June, specifically June 20, 21, and 22.

The most homicides in a single day occurred on June 28 in three different districts on the 2600 block of Harford Road, the 5200 block of Reisterstown Road, and the 2600 block of West Patapsco Avenue.

The majority of homicides were reported in the southern parts of the city, including four homicides in the Southwestern District and three each homicides in the Southern and Southeastern districts.

The Northeastern, Northwestern, and Eastern districts also had three homicides each, while two homicides occurred in the Northern district and one homicide each in the Western and Central districts.

Only three of the 23 homicide cases in June have resulted in arrests.

No police-involved homicides or vehicular deaths were reported in June.
