“The evidence has to line up,” defense attorney Brandon Patterson told jurors as he represented his client, 31-year-old Quanta Worrell, at the start of his double murder trial on March 6.

Worrell is currently facing 19 charges, including first and second-degree murder, conspiracy to first-degree murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and several weapons charges, for the murder of Stephen Sanders, 38, and Dimarcus Waldo, 54, on the 3000 block of Oakley Avenue on March 25, 2020.

Earlier in the proceeding, the prosecution informed the jury that Sanders was driving Waldo to the area, where Worrell told Sanders to meet him around the block. Shortly after, the defendant and his two friends allegedly ambushed the victims in the vehicle, firing 19 shots with three different guns.

The prosecutor said the defendant claimed someone in the car disrespected him after looking him in the face and that the jury should expect to hear testimony and see a video that links Worrell to the murders.

During his opening statement, Patterson questioned the prosecution’s presentation of the facts, telling jurors to be mindful of the evidence.

“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty,” said Patterson, who noted that no weapon was linked to Worrell and that the shooting wasn’t captured on video surveillance. “If [the prosecution] says he’s guilty, then why are we sitting here?”

Testimony began on Monday and is expected to continue on March 7 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Ausby.
