On Feb. 2, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn scheduled a Baltimore man charged with attempted murder for trial following his decision to reject the plea offered to him.
On Thursday, the prosecutor offered defendant Desmond Powell a plea of 50 years, suspending all but 25 years, the first five without the possibility of parole and five years of supervised probation for attempted first-degree murder; a consecutive five years for illegal possession of a regulated firearm; and an additional consecutive sentence of five years for using a firearm in a felony violent crime for an incident that occurred on July 17, 2022.
According to the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), Powell was arrested on July 21, 2022 , and charged with the non-fatal shooting of a 40-year-old man on the 5500 block of Bowley’s Lane.
Judge Phinn scheduled the defendant’s trial to begin on July 11 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea Handy. The trial is expected to last three days.
According to the Maryland Judiciary website, Powell, who is represented by attorney Angela Shelton, is charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, having a handgun on his person, illegally possessing a regulated firearm, illegally possessing ammo and firearm use in a felony violent crime..
