On Oct. 11, an attempted murder defendant rejected a plea of life, prompting Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn to set his trial for May 2023.
Deandre Whitehead, 38, is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, use of a firearm during a felony violent crime, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a firearm, having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person, discharging firearms, illegal possession of ammo, and two counts of having a handgun within 100 yards of a public place in connection to the shooting of a 34-year-old man.
Whitehead and his defense attorney Marci T. Johnson, rejected a plea of life suspending all but 18 years for first-degree attempted murder and 18 years, the first five years without parole, and three years of probation for use of a firearm during a felony violent crime. The charges are set to run concurrently.
According to Fox45 Baltimore, Whitehead allegedly shot the victim in the leg after an argument shortly after 11:30 p.m. on March 26, 2021, on the 800 block of Carroll Street.
Under the plea, the defendant would have had to register as a gun offender and stay away from the victim.
Whitehead’s trial is scheduled for May 22, 2023. It is expected to last five days.
