Defendant Pleads Guilty to Assault, Receives Time Served Sentence

A 34-year-old Baltimore man who pleaded guilty to assault was sentenced to time served on Sept. 20 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Yolanda Tanner. 

Hughie Martin was initially charged with second-degree attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, use of a firearm during a violent crime, having a handgun on his person, having a handgun in a vehicle, and discharging firearms in connection to an incident on Sept. 25, 2020. 

Initially, Martin was charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to first-degree assault on April 19. 

Martin’s defense counsel, Warren Brown, told Judge Tanner that his client has been on home detention for two years. Brown also said his client was raising his three kids. 

He hasn’t had any problems, he’s been working hard and is a businessman. 

Brown requested that his client be released to home detention, so he can return to the life he was living and be with his kids. 

Martin apologized to the victim’s family. It was a disagreement that got out of hand, said Martin. 

He also said he is willing to accept his punishment whether he is in jail or at home on home detention. If given the chance to be on home detention he will have his kids live with him. 

After listening to counsel and the defendant, Judge Tanner said young men like the defendant think that guns are a solution to a problem but all it does is create more problems. 

Firearms are not a solution, said Judge Tanner. 

Judge Tanner sentenced the defendant to 10 years suspending all but time served with four years on probation. 

The defendant must attend and complete anger management courses, stay away from the 3400 block of W. Belvedere Avenue, and have no contact with the victim or the victim’s family.
