An attempted homicide defendant rejected a plea offer on Nov. 1 and was scheduled for trial in May 2022.
Deandre Whitehead, 37, is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder in connection to the shooting of a 34-year-old man, according to Fox45 Baltimore. Whitehead allegedly shot the victim in the leg after an argument shortly after 11:30 p.m. on March 26 on the 800 block of Carroll Street.
In addition to attempted murder, Whitehead is also facing charges of firearm use in a violent crime, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a firearm, having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person, discharging firearms, illegal possession of ammo, and two counts of having a handgun within 100 yards of a public place.
On Monday, the prosecutor offered Whitehead a plea of life, suspending all but 25 years, for attempted first-degree murder; 20 years, the first five years without parole, for firearm use in a violent crime; and three years supervised probation. All sentence terms would have been set to run concurrently.
Whitehead must also stay away from the victim, the prosecutor said.
After rejecting the offer, defense attorney Marci Johnson and the prosecution said they would be ready for trial on May 3, 2022. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn found good cause to waive Whitehead’s Hick’s date of Nov. 2—a defendant’s right to a speedy trial within 180 days of their first court appearance.
