Attempted Murder Trial Delayed After Last Minute Disclosure of Jail Calls

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Hope Tipton postponed the attempted murder trial of Michael Reed on June 1 after the defense received the content of two jail calls the morning jury selection was set to begin.

Reed, 22, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and various firearm offenses in relation to a July 10, 2025 shooting on the 1200 block of W. North Avenue.

On Monday, defense attorney Deborah Warner-Dennis notified the court of a discovery issue, claiming the state had sent her information from two jail calls just hours before jury selection was set to begin that morning. Warner-Dennis moved to postpone the trial, arguing that she needed more time to identify the caller, determine their relationship to Reed and assess whether the caller could serve as a witness at trial.

Judge Tipton denied the postponement, but cleared the courtroom to allow Warner-Dennis and Reed to review the calls. Warner-Dennis continued urging for postponement, though Reed adamantly expressed a desire to proceed without further investigation.

Judge Tipton noted the late disclosure of evidence was not a violation by the prosecution, as the calls were turned over as soon as practicable. She ruled the trial would resume the following morning to allow Warner-Dennis additional time to review the calls and consult with Reed.

The trial is scheduled to resume the morning of June 2.
