Former Teacher Sentenced to 20 Years For Conspiracy in Teen Shooting

Matthew Biegel, 39, a former teacher at Reginald F. Lewis High School, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree assault during a plea hearing on Jan. 27 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Yvette M. Bryant.

In an incident as reported by WBAL-TV, “a teenager shot another teenager in the face and torso on McElderry Street on July 10, 2023. The victim was listed as critically injured.” Police determined that Biegel was in an inappropriate relationship with one of the teenagers but the specifics have not been revealed.

In the widely publicized case, the victim reported seeing Biegel driving the alleged shooter in a black SUV before the incident occurred. The SUV reportedly belonged to Biegel’s parents and the alleged shooter was arrested at Biegel’s residence.

Biegel was originally indicted for attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, having a handgun on his person and in his vehicle, having a loaded handgun on his person and in his vehicle, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, conspiracy to firearm use in a felony violent crime, conspiracy to have a handgun on his person and in his vehicle, conspiracy to have a loaded handgun on his person, accessory after the fact, harboring a fleeing felon, harboring a felon or fugitive, and obstructing and hindering.

Biegel was sentenced to 20 years in prison, suspending all but five years, and five years of supervised probation. He was given a no contact order with the victim.
