Prosecutors introduced Baltimore CitiWatch surveillance footage as evidence in a case involving 42-year-old homicide defendant Lionel Matthews in a Feb. 5 trial before Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer.
The footage shows a man who is identified as Matthews in a green shirt, jeans and white shoes opening fire at 38-year-old Bryant Williams on Feb. 29, 2024. Matthews then is then said to flee the scene on a bicycle that Baltimore Police Department officers allegedly recovered at Matthews’ uncle’s residence on the 1000 block of Baltimore Street.
Detectives questioned Matthews’ uncle, who was allegedly able to identify the man in the footage as his nephew.
The defense attorney told the jury that the prosecution’s evidence is primarily circumstantial and not enough to prove Matthews’ guilt beyond reasonable doubt. She emphasized that the only evidence linking Matthews to the crime is the general description of his clothing.
Matthews is charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, possessing a firearm with a felony conviction and having a loaded handgun on his person.
