The jury heard closing arguments for a homicide defendant on April 26 in front of Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Videtta A. Brown.

Tyyea Gee, 39, faces two counts of first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and firearm possession with a felony conviction in relation to the killing of 37-year-old Ronnie Gibson on Jan. 13, 2023.

The prosecution argued that  the defendant “flash[ed] some sort of item” that appeared to be a gun on surveillance footage. He also argued that the shoes the killer was wearing matched those found at the defendant’s house. “This was not some sort of heat of the moment thing,” the prosecutor said, claiming a premeditated murder.

Gee’s defense attorney, James Sweeting III, claimed that the surveillance footage was unclear, and the defendant could not be identified. Both witnesses said they couldn’t identify him. Sweeting also argued that Gee was not the cause of the fight that led to the homicide but rather, it was his girlfriend.

The killing took place after a fight broke out between two dogs on the 800 block of Stoll Street. Gee’s girlfriend’s dog was involved, leading to an altercation between Gee and a woman who was observing in her car. The car pulled away then returned with the victim, Gibson.

As the argument continued, witnesses testified that they saw two men chase Gibson down the block with handguns, shooting and killing him.
