The trial for the murder of a volunteer firefighter originally set for Sept. 8 was postponed due to the defense counsel’s illness.

Daniel Greene, 39, is charged with first-degree murder, home invasion, firearm use in a violent crime, and having a handgun on his person in connection to the fatal shooting of volunteer firefighter Jon Hickey. His trial is scheduled to last for 10 days.

Defense attorney Warren Brown, who represents Greene, was diagnosed with COVID-19, and requested a new trial date in reception court on Sept. 8.

According to WBAL TV, Greene was charged with the “execution-style murder” of Hickey in Baltimore City in 2017. The prosecution said that the possible motive for the crime revolved around a love triangle, which involved Greene’s ex-mistress.

News sources reported that video surveillance from a nearby corner store shows a man, later identified as Greene via his ex-mistress, breaking into Hickey’s home. This evidence, however, was dropped by Baltimore City Circuit Judge M. Brooke Murdock due to the “unduly suggestive and unreliable” nature of the video.

After deliberation during reception court before Judge Melissa M. Phinn last week, Brown and the prosecution agreed on a new trial date of Feb. 1, 2022.
