On July 15, a trial continued for a 32-year-old homicide defendant before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy.
Kyle J. Cooper is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of firearm use in a felony violent crime, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, having a handgun in his vehicle, having a handgun on his person and possession of a firearm with a felony conviction.
Cooper appeared in court Monday with his attorney Brandon Taylor.
The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 31, 2023, when Cooper allegedly shot 66-year-old Eric Gill and another individual on the 6100 block of Edlynne Road.
The second victim suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was released from the hospital on Sept. 1, 2023.
During the trial, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers presented evidence, including Cooper’s cell phone, which contained text message conversations between Cooper and others.
On the night of the shooting, Cooper was allegedly discussing the sale of a handgun with an individual, according to the texts.
According to opening statements on July 15, parties are arguing over whether the shooting stemmed from an argument or an attempted carjacking.
Additionally, the prosecution presented footage from a Ring door camera, showed Cooper leaving the scene with another person after the shooting.
