A jury reached a guilty verdict in the trial of a man involved in an alcohol-induced shooting on July 22.
Deon Hudson, 29, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, firearm use in a felony violent crime, having a handgun on his person and firing a gun in Baltimore City in connection to an incident that took place on May 28, 2023, on the 200 block of South Monroe Street.
The jury returned to Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill with a not guilty verdict to the charge of attempted first-degree murder, but a guilty verdict to the charges of attempted second-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, having a handgun on his person and firing a gun in Baltimore City. There was no verdict rendered for the first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges.
At trial, counsel agreed that after Hudson and others had been drinking heavily, an argument related to an earlier event. The prosecution said that Hudson then threatened to kill people in the group, while defense attorney Matthew Connell argued that it was Hudson who felt threatened and emphasized the role that alcohol played in the altercation.
Hudson eventually walked to his bag and pulled out a handgun before shooting the victim multiple times. The victim fled through the backdoor of the house, jumping over the fence in the yard before collapsing in the alleyway. Connell told the jury during closing arguments that Hudson had told the police, “This never would’ve happened if I hadn’t been that drunk.”
Hudson’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 11.
