The Baltimore Police Department notified the public Aug. 3 that a shooting that took place more than two years ago is now being considered a homicide.

According to a press release, a Shot Spotter alert sent officers to the 1400 block of W. Fayette Street on April 2, 2019, around 10:45 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found an adult man with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center.

The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Jamie Vaughn. He pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, firearm use in a violent crime, and carrying or wearing a handgun on his person on Oct. 28, 2019, and is currently serving time in prison.

On May 23, the victim, 37-year-old Jaquan Purvis, succumbed to his injuries. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide due to complications stemming from the gunshot wounds sustained in 2019. As a result, the non-fatal shooting of Purvis has been upgraded to a homicide.

As of Tuesday, there have been 197 homicides in Baltimore in 2021.
