Homicide defendant Tyshaun Williams appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland on April 3 in search of a new trial date with his defense attorney Judit Otvos.

Williams, 19, was originally represented by Megan Lewis. He was set to begin trial in front of Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Videtta A. Brown on April 3 for his alleged involvement in the homicide of 19 year-old Deontay Edwards on July 12, 2022, on the 1700 block of Oliver Street.

Williams faces over 60 charges, including multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, robbery and firearm offenses.

Otvos explained to Judge Copland that she had taken over this case from Lewis with short notice and was unprepared to begin trial on the scheduled date.

The prosecutor  told Judge Copeland they expected between eight and 10 days for trial. However, Judge Copeland told them she could only give them six days in September and that she would need to “hunt” for a new judge to preside over the trial.

After much deliberation, counsel  agreed on Judge Copeland’s offer of Sept. 16-23. Judge Copeland assured them that she would try her best to find a judge available for seven days, but could not guarantee it.
