Pennsylvania Avenue Attempted Murder Defendant Sentenced to 30 Years

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Charles H. Dorsey sentenced a 44-year-old Baltimore man on June 6 for a 2022 attempted murder. 

Calvin Hemphill was convicted of attempted second-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and having a handgun on his person for an incident that occurred on 1500 block of  Pennsylvania Avenue on April 4, 2022. 

For attempted second-degree murder, life, suspending all but 30 years, with five years of supervised probation. For firearm use in a felony violent crime, Hemphill will serve a concurrent 20 years, suspending all but nine years, with the first five years without the possibility of parole. For having a handgun on his person, Hemphill will serve a concurrent three years. 

According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, on April 4, Baltimore Police Department officers responded to a call about a shooting where the victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds in his torso. There was evidence of cartridge casings and blood at the crime scene. 

Evidence also included video footage of Hemphill wearing a face mask and all black clothing, walking toward the crime scene. Video footage showed Hemphill pointing a handgun at the victim before the shooting occurred.
