The Baltimore Police Department and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office are investigating an assault that ended in an officer fatally shooting a man on Nov. 6

On Sunday, at approximately 3:39 p.m., Western District officers were dispatched to the intersection of N. Fulton and W. Lafayette Avenues for a report of a man with a knife assaulting a female on the ground.

When officers arrived on scene, they exited their vehicle and gave verbal commands for the male to get on the ground. The male, holding the knife, went to the ground on top of the female.

One officer discharged his weapon, striking the male multiple times.

An officer was able to relocate the female to safety, while another officer rendered aid to the male. Medics responded to the scene and transported the male to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. The female was treated on scene by medics for minor injuries.

The male has been identified as 46-year-old Tyree Moorehead of Baltimore. Baltimore Police Department’s Special Investigations Response Team (SIRT) and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office responded and will conduct a joint investigation. The department has activated its Public Release of Critical Incident Recordings Policy. For more information on the policy, click here.
