Northeast District Officers Report Arrest in Woodmont Avenue Homicide Investigation

On Dec. 4, 2022, at approximately 3:10 a.m., officers responded to the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue to investigate a call for a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers observed a pregnant 19-year-old female, later identified as Jaymyra Burrell, suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Medics transported Burrell to John Hopkins Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased despite life-saving measures.

Homicide detectives responded and assumed control over this investigation.

After an extensive investigation, detectives were able to identify a suspect in the murder of Jaymyra Burrell.

On July 1, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office members arrested 22-year-old Malik McCormick of Baltimore while conducting a traffic stop in South Charleston, W.V.

During the traffic stop, members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office discovered that McCormick had an outstanding warrant for the murder Burrell that occurred on Dec. 4, 2022, on the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue. 

On July 18, at approximately 8 p.m., McCormick was expedited from South Charleston, W.V., to Baltimore, Maryland’s Central Booking Intake Facility, where he has been charged with first-degree murder and various handgun violations.
