On May 8, an attempted murder defendant appeared on the reception court docket in Baltimore City Circuit Court in error, according to his defense attorney.

Attorney James Sweeting III told Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland that his client, Daykai Quarles, was awaiting a mental health evaluation. Judge Copeland moved the case to mental health court with a hearing date of May 24.

Quarles, 23, is currently being charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, discharging firearms, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment in connection to an incident that occurred on Aug. 10, 2022.

According to the statement of charges, Quarles opened fire at the victim on the 4400 block of Elderon Avenue after an argument broke out between his father and the victim. Quarles began shooting from the second-story window of his home and continued to shoot until the victim entered his house. The victim was not injured.

Judge Copeland scheduled the defendant’s next hearing for July 5.
