New Year’s Day Shooter Sentenced to Life

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Paul Alpert sentenced defendant Gilbert Della to life in prison on Sept. 14 for his involvement in the murder of Ikeem Issac on New Year’s Day in 2019.

In July, a jury found Della guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of using a firearm in a felony violent crime, and having a loaded handgun after a four-day trial. The fatal shooting occurred on the 4900 block of Frederick Avenue.

Forensic biologists were able to link the defendant through DNA evidence recovered from objects found the crime scene, including a cellphone and sweatshirt.

During the proceedings on Wednesday, Judge Alpert sentenced Della to life, suspending all but 55 years with five years of supervised probation upon release for first-degree murder; a consecutive sentence of 5 years for using a firearm in a felony violent crime.

Defense attorneys Jonathan Kerr and Megan Lewis represented the defendant.
