Openings for a jury trial began on Sept. 25 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Hope Tipton for a man charged with the murder his girlfriend last year.

Kenneth Craig, 60, is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure for the homicide on April 18, 2023.

Tthe prosecution described the scene as very bloody as the body of 36-year-old Shakita Thomas, Craig’s girlfriend at the time, was found stabbed in the face, neck, cheeks, head and back 43 times on the 500 block of East Jeffrey Street.

The prosecution continued, noting that Craig’s blood was likely found at the scene and someone matching his description was observed in his van nearby.

Defense attorney Natalie Finegar said the description the witnesses presented did not match Craig. Finegar also claimed that Thomas’ family was biased against Craig as a motive for making an identification.

The evidence of Craig’s blood being was circumstantial, she argued, as it is “easy to get DNA”. Finegar also said detectives “had already made up their mind about Craig and tried pressuring him into making a confession.”

Testimony continues on Thursday
