Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland refrained from scheduling the trial for 30-year-old attempted murder defendant Oct. 10 due to pending mental competency concerns.
Brian Allen Watkins is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and firearm use in a felony violent crime for an incident on Nov. 11, 2023.
The stand-in prosecutor did not have an offer to relay to Watkins in court Oct. 10. As defense attorney Donald Wright only entered his appearance in the case yesterday, the parties had yet to exchange the evidence against Watkins.
Wright told Judge Copeland he planned to file requests for mental health evaluation and a not criminally responsible plea later Thursday.
Judge Copeland continued the hearing to allow time for mental health court to review the case. Counsel will reconvene in reception court Oct. 17.
