A 2008 non-fatal shooting was ruled a homicide on Monday after medical examiners revealed the victim’s death was related to the gunshot wounds.

On May 24, a press release states, medical examiners informed Baltimore homicide detectives of their findings in the autopsy of 32-year-old Dontee Nicholson.

According to the press release, the shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. on July 13, 2008, on the 1600 block of Eutaw Place where officers found Nicholson, then 19, with gunshot wounds to his lower torso.

Police said Nicholson’s injuries required surgery and confined him to a wheelchair.

Deandre Davon Smith, then 18, was identified as the shooter and arrested on Aug. 1, 2008. Smith faced charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder but was found not guilty.

In November 2020, the press release states, Nicholson was taken to Johns Hopkins at Bayview in grave condition and was pronounced dead on Nov. 7, 2020.

Following an autopsy at the Medical Examiner’s office, it was determined that Nicholson died from “complications from remote gunshot wounds” and his death was ruled a homicide.
