Man Wounded in Shootout Released for Possible Medical Treatment

A 41-year-old Baltimore man allegedly involved in a shootout last December was released on private home detention to receive medical treatment for injuries sustained in the shooting.

Defense attorney Amanda Savage argued for the release of her client, Tavon Lawson, during a bail review hearing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Christopher L. Panos on Sept. 26. Savage informed the court that Lawson was not receiving the medical attention he needed while incarcerated, saying he may need surgery to remove pieces of bullets from his arm and neck.

“He was a victim. He got shot,” Savage said, noting that Lawson denies his involvement in the incident on Dec. 29, 2022.

The defense attorney said she has yet to receive discovery from the prosecution, including CCTV footage to begin reviewing the case.

“Right now, [these allegations] are just words on paper,” she said.

A prosecutor, who said she was a last-minute stand-in for the assistant state’s attorney assigned to the case, told Judge Panos that over 40 rounds were fired during the shootout. She recommended no bail and explained the defendant did fire a handgun. However, it is unclear how many of the firearms belonged to Lawson.

At the conclusion of the proceedings, Judge Panos agreed to release the defendant on private home detention with a $10,000 unsecured bond. This does not require the defendant to post the bond in cash or equity, but rather requires him to pay only if he fails to appear in court.

Lawson is currently charged with having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person and discharging a firearm in Baltimore City as well as two counts of firearm possession with a felony conviction.

He is next scheduled to appear in reception court on Dec. 7.
