A man previously convicted in the stabbing death of his wife had the start of his retrial transferred to another date on April 3 in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Amit Kumar’s trial was set to begin on Monday before Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill but the case was never called.

Kumar, 43, was found guilty on Nov. 8, 2019, for first-degree murder and using a deadly weapon with the intent to injure for fatally stabbing his wife, Anikta Verma.

According to an unreported opinion by the Court of Special Appeals, Kumar and his defense team were granted an appeal on April 13, 2021, due to the defense counsel not being allowed to ask jurors certain questions during voir dire.

On the night of the incident an unreported opinion stated that Kumar and his wife were having a dispute about her affair with her boss who also happened to be their landlord. Verma was upset with Kumar because he was telling other people about the affair and she was worried her family would find out.

The following day, on Jan. 11, 2019, officers were called to the 6700 block of Holabird Avenue. where Verma was found inside the apartment suffering from a total of 55 stab and cut wounds.

Kumar’s next trial date is set for Sept. 5 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge John Addison Howard.
