A 22-year-old man charged with two murders was denied bail on Sept. 7, despite multiple health problems increasing his risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Baltimore resident Charles Baldwin was represented by his defense attorney, Brandon Mead, during bail review on Tuesday at Baltimore City Circuit Court. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit an armed robery, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and multiple firearm-related charges.

Mead informed Judge Robert Taylor that Baldwin’s mother was concerned for his health while incarcerated because of his asthma, a heart murmur, and anemia, all of which increase the chances of a severe case of COVID-19 if contracted.

Baldwin vehemently denied involvement in the incident, according to Mead.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Baldwin, along with co-defendant Mizell Taylor, are accused of the murders of 21-year-old Diamond Davis, 20-year-old Pedro Chesley, and the shooting of one other individual, who were all shot on the 700 block of Grantley Street on March 11, 2020.

Mead asked for home detention due to Baldwin’s health issues and lack of previous charges, but Judge Taylor ordered him to continue to be held without bail.

Baldwin is currently being charged in a separate incident where law enforcement raided his home and found multiple guns.
