A man with 48 charges against him, ranging from assault to discharging a firearm in the city of Baltimore, discussed his inability to retain proper representation during reception court on Sept. 21 at Baltimore City Circuit Court.

The 32-year-old defendant told Judge Melissa Phinn that he was previously represented by defense attorney Tony Garcia; however, he had a conflict of interest, so he was no longer able to represent the defendant.

The defendant said that he is in the process of hiring an attorney but has not been able to get in contact with him due to jail restrictions after a fatal stabbing last month. The movement of inmates has been severely restricted, he said, making it difficult for him to make phone calls, which is the only way he can communicate with his attorney.

The Baltimore resident is charged with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property, discharging a firearm in Baltimore, and other related charges.

The defendant is scheduled to return to reception court on Oct. 22, the day before his Hick’s date, which is his right to be tried within 180 days of his first court appearance.
