A 17-year-old juvenile was released on electronic home monitoring on Nov. 4 after he allegedly fired a handgun across four lanes of traffic.

During bail review before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Philip S. Jackson on Thursday, the prosecutor said video surveillance showed the defendant with a group of individuals outside of a gas station when he allegedly reached into a bag and pulled out a handgun. He then fired the handgun in an area known for both vehicle and foot traffic.

No injuries were reported, and a date and location of the incident were not disclosed.

The defendant was later identified by officers with the Baltimore Police Department as he had been previously arrested in 2019 for another handgun charge. The prosecutor said the defendant poses a danger to public safety and recommended he be held without bail.

Defense attorney Sasha Garcon recommended home detention, specifically strict home detention, to prove to the court that the juvenile is not a flight risk. Garcon said that prior to the incident, the defendant was working on his GED, employed at McDonald’s, and participating in therapy at the University of Maryland.

The defendant also takes medication for depression, Garcon added.

Judge Jackson ruled the juvenile be placed on electronic home monitoring and 24/7 home lockdown.
