Following a one-day delay over evidence concerns, jury selection began June 2 in the trial of attempted murder defendant Michael Reed.
Reed, 22, is charged with attempted first‑ and second‑degree murder, first‑degree assault, reckless endangerment, and several firearm offenses in connection to a July 10, 2025 shooting on the 1200 block of W. North Avenue.
On Monday, defense attorney Deborah Warner‑Dennis notified the court that she had received two jail call recordings from the state just hours before jury selection was scheduled to begin. Warner-Dennis argued that the late disclosure prevented her from identifying the caller, determining their relationship to Redd, or assessing whether the individual could be a potential witness.
Judge Hope Tipton initially denied the motion for postponement, and Reed insisted he wanted to proceed without delay, despite his attorney’s concerns.
On June 2, Judge Tipton advised counsel she would examine the jail calls overnight before ruling whether to admit them for trial.
The trial is set to continue through the week.
