Judge Schedules Trial for Murder Defendant Accused of Leaving a Woman’s Body in a Plastic Container

On July 6, a Baltimore City defendant charged with murdering a woman and leaving her body inside a plastic container is scheduled to begin trial on Dec 4.

Baltimore City Circuit Judge Melissa M. Phinn scheduled Timothy Callanan’s trial to begin Dec 4 before Judge Jennifer Schiffer. The prosecution expected the trial to last 10 days and have 20 witnesses, many from out of state.

Baltimore City Circuit Court’s Medical Services Division recently found Callanan mentally competent to stand trial for the 2020 murder of Mason Moldoven. The division previously found the 29-year-old defendant incompetent to stand trial in June 2022.

Callanan was represented by Taylor Miller, a stand-in for defense attorney Tony Garcia.

The prosecution did not make a plea offer as negotiations with the defense had recently begun.

According to court documents, detectives from the Baltimore City Homicide Division discovered Moldoven’s remains wrapped in a sheet and inside a large plastic container in the rear yard of the 1100 block of Gorsuch Avenue while doing a wellness check on Sep 2, 2020. An autopsy revealed the victim’s death was homicide by way of multiple injuries.

A witness interviewed by detectives during the investigation revealed Callanan confessed over the phone to murdering the victim. The investigation estimated Callanan murdered Moldoven between Aug. 28 and Sep. 1, 2020.

As stated on the Maryland Judiciary website, Callanan is charged with first-degree murder.
