On Aug. 1, Baltimore City Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn postponed the trial for 29-year-old Samal Chavis due to his attorney, James Sweeting III, having another trial scheduled for that day.
Chavis will reappear in reception court on Aug. 30 to reschedule his trial.
Chavis is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, reckless endangerment from a vehicle, having a loaded handgun in a vehicle, having a gun in a vehicle, having a loaded handgun on his person and having a handgun on his person in connection to a March 21, 2022 incident.
According to court documents, Baltimore Police Department officers found Chavis’ girlfriend suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in the driver’s seat of her car. She told officers that Chavis had followed her from her job in the county to the 2900 block of Stafford Street, where the incident occurred. Officers recovered seven 9mm shell casings from the scene.
