During a Nov. 28 Baltimore reception court hearing, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn agreed to postpone a hearing on behalf of a murder defendant who allegedly shot his girlfriend and left her to die in a grassy field.
Daya Jones is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm during a violent felony, having a handgun on his person, having a handgun in vehicle on a public road, and two counts of possessing a firearm with a felony conviction in connection to the death of 27-year-old Nikea Jackson on April 19, 2021, on the 700 block of Woodbourne Avenue.
At Monday’s proceeding, Judge Phinn agreed to postpone matters due to the prosecution’s absence. A stand-in for her informed the court that she was attending a funeral service.
According to The Baltimore Sun, Jones, 46, who reportedly possesses a history of domestic violence, opened fire on Jackson as they drove in Mid-Govans in North Baltimore.
After sustaining several gunshot wounds to the side, witnesses alleged that Jackson apparently “banged on the door” of a residence, crying for help. In response, Jones was spotted carrying the victim to a grass field before fleeing the scene.
When police were notified of the shooting, they arrived at the field and transported Jackson to Sinai Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The Baltimore Police Warrant Task Force arrested Jones on April 23, 2021. It was then that he delivered a full confession to authorities.
Parties are scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday, Nov. 30 to further address the case with both counsels present.
Jones is currently being held in Central Booking without bail.
