A 52-year-old man accused of murdering his 75-year-old mother was sent to a mental hospital by the court.

Kevin Burke faces a first-degree murder charge for the death of Stewartress Burke. Officers from the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) responded to the 2400 block of Gainsborough Court to investigate a death on Dec. 7, 2022.

According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, Burke admitted to assaulting his mother during an argument. The victim appeared to have signs of trauma on her upper body and was pronounced dead by medics at the scene.

During mental health court on April 26, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale Rasin informed the prosecution and defense attorney Sharon Bogins Eberhart that the court received a report from Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup that found Burke incompetent to stand trial yet restorable following a mental health evaluation.

On May 1, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin signed a new commitment order for Burke stipulating a status conference on the matter after six months. Burke was represented by Sharon Bogins Eberhart

Burke will remain committed until he can be reevaluated. Judge Rasin requested an annual review in the order.
