After a continuance of a day, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Copeland decided to schedule an attempted murder defendant’s trial in February of 2023.
Thelononious Monk, 21, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, firearm use, firearm possession with a prior conviction, handgun on person, loaded handgun on person, illegal possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm in connection to the non-fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man on Jan. 18 on the 2400 block of Washington Boulevard. The victim received multiple shots in his back.
On Oct. 20, the first day of the hearing, a stand-in for the prosecution delivered a plea offer of life in prison, suspending all but six years, with the first five years without the possibility of parole and five years of supervised probation for for attempted first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony violent crime. The defendant would also be required to stay away from the victim.
Monk’s defense attorney, Jason Rodriguez, declined the offer and requested a postponement for the trial. He didn’t cite a reason for this request.
According to the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), Monk allegedly turned himself in six-and-a-half months after the incident.
On Oct. 21, Judge Copeland scheduled Monk’s trial on Feb. 21, 2023, before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry G. Williams.
